About Us
The club was established in 2002. We currently have 16 members*, a mixture of working and retired people. We have two* female members and would like to see this number increase. Our maximum permitted quota is 21. Many members reside in Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells, others reside in East Sussex and South East London.
We settled on the name Swan because the club was formed by the founders after a conversation in a pub of that name in West Peckham, Kent, that brews its own beer.
Existing* members have a range of expertise including a retired FTSE100 company secretary, a working senior executive in a major financial institution, an author and a number of members with degree and higher degree qualifications. This leads to vigorous debate on the performance of holdings and the merit of potential buys, which all members are able to participate in.
Many members use Sharescope to monitor both their own and the club's portfolios. We use a computer projector at meetings to show portfolio performance and to illustrate the fundamental performance of potential purchases.
Each member holds units in the club's portfolio which is revalued immediately prior to the monthly meeting. Members monthly subscriptions are used to purchase additional units at the current value. At commencement the unit value was 100p.
Meetings are held at Tonbridge Indoor Bowls Club* on the first Tuesday evening of each month.
As well as discussing the pros and cons of various investments, it is a valuable forum to discuss other financial matters with a group of 'like-minded' people; this is not always possible with people from your wider circle of friends and contacts. Each year we meet for dinner with our partners which is always a pleasant social occasion where finance takes a back seat!
